Today we have the pleasure of sharing with you a gorgeous wedding from the heart of West Yorkshire. Gemma and Gareth tied the knot at Oakwell Hall, Batley in April in an intimate ceremony in front of all their closest family and friends. With a pastel colour scheme and wonderful handmade touches, all the beautiful images were captured by Sadie at Baildon Wedding Photography.
First of all, how did you meet?
“Gareth and I met eleven years ago when we both worked in a Leeds nightclub. Gareth insists it was love at first sight but I needed a bit more gentle persuasion from him! We now have two beautiful children and our dog, Minnie. The only thing left to do was to get married….. So after 9 years together Gareth (finally!) proposed on Valentine’s day with a little help from our daughter, who illustrated the request in a card for him. It’s the first time in her life I’ve known her to keep a secret as I had no inclination!”
Gemma wore a dress from Wedding Belles bridal boutique in Otley, West Yorkshire, says Gemma,
“I tried on lots of lovely dresses in a range of styles but I didn’t feel comfortable. I liked the simplicity of my dress with the long train and pearl buttons down the back. I had not seen anything like it despite seeing hundreds of dresses.”
She also accessorized her dress with a Twilight belt and hair piece and Rainbow Club shoes. Gareth wore a Ted Baker Lounge Lizard blue suit. The ushers wore grey suits from Slaters.
Gemma and Gareth chose Oakwell Hall to be the venue for both the wedding ceremony and reception. A Grade I listed Elizabethan Manor House, Oakwell not only boasts beautifully restored period gardens, it’s also set in over 100 acres of award winning country park.
“We fell in love with the Elizabethan hall. The hall is alleged to have spiritual encounters having been featured on The Most Haunted. Despite these reports we have always found the hall to have a calm relaxed atmosphere which is complemented with the Elizabethan architecture, dramatic window lighting and tall ceiling.”
“It was the first venue we viewed but we found ourselves comparing each subsequent venue against it. It was the versatility that the venue offered us that decided it for us. The Hall being a formal venue for the ceremony, with an added bonus of the available listed barn for the more informal reception. All set amongst beautiful gardens. It had everything we wanted in a venue.”
All the flowers at the wedding were supplied by Duck and Daffodils, York, including the bouquet and buttonholes.
“These flowers were gorgeous, they were seasonal flowers grown on a farm in York. Rachel who grows and arranges the flowers did an amazing job with the bouquets and button holes. She then supplied buckets of flowers which we arranged ourselves on tables. I’d highly recommend people around York to check these flowers out.”
“We tried to save as much money as possible by doing as much as we could ourselves. I made the wedding invitations and used the same ribbon on the cake.”
“Gareth designed & printed the order of service for the ceremony as well as printing & binding the colouring books included in the children’s activity packs which I made. I also made drink token vouchers for place settings.”
“As it was Easter we decided to give each guest a personalised iced Easter egg. These acted as place cards too. I spent a few(!) hours icing 60 eggs, which I wrapped in cellophane with a ribbon. It was well worth the effort as it served the purpose and the eggs really suited the time of year. All the suppliers were brilliant. Polka Dot made up my hair and make up beautifully. Steven Heath did a fantastic job of supplying music throughout the day and Gingham Catering’s afternoon tea was plentiful and delicious.”
“The kids party bus was a brilliant addition for breaking the day up for the children and I know this was my son’s particular highlight.
Later in the day, Love Sweet Love made delicious cocktails which I probably should have had less of! But after months of precision planning I was letting my hair down!
The evening street food supplied by KK catering received many complements from our evening guests.
Gareth did a brilliant job of utilising his AV & IT skills, creating a social media wall so guests could hash tag their photos and photo booth pictures. This worked well at collating all the photos and getting to see the wedding from our guests’ perspective. Of course Sadie of Baildon Wedding Photography was brilliant and made us feel so relaxed throughout the day, really capturing the moments naturally which really shows in the pictures.”
Thank you Gemma and Gareth for sharing your day with us.
